We got a chance to interview the stunning artist Irene Michaels in regard to her new single ‘My Heart’ and her musical journey. We gained insights into her work, sources of inspiration, and much more.
Q. First of all it is great to have you on Just Indie Art and congratulations on your new single! We’re excited to delve into it shortly, but first, we’d love to learn more about you and your musical journey.
I’ve been in the entertainment business since childhood, working as a dancer, model, actress, award-winning equestrian, author, and lifestyle blogger. However, I’ve always loved singing and performing in nightclubs and cabarets. When I was offered the chance to record a house music track with the Chicago TRAX record label, I seized the opportunity and dove into singing full-speed ahead. My first hit record, titled ‘I Like Rain,’ marked the beginning of an exciting journey that has brought me to where I am today. I’m thrilled to share that ‘I Like Rain’ has earned me several awards, including the Josie Music Awards for 2023.
Q. ‘My Heart’ is a wonderful song. Kindly share the process that you followed while you were working on the album.
I am currently working on an album supporting the single ‘My Heart.’ It features the iconic, legendary DJ Joe Smooth, who created an extended mix and a radio edit of the track. These versions have just been released on the New York-based boutique record label Tribeca Records.
Q. In the process of creating this song, can you share an unexpected source of inspiration that took your work in a surprising direction?
I am often inspired by unexpected moments as life unfolds. In the case of ‘My Heart,’ I drew inspiration from the incredible talent of Joe Smooth and from my husband, Arny, who is truly ‘My Heart.’
Q. Your music evokes a wide range of emotions. How do you intentionally manipulate musical elements to create specific emotional responses in your listeners?
That happens organically. I feel my own passion, which evokes the same feeling in others. We are all human, sharing the same wants and desires, and often experiencing similar situations and responses to them. I want to share my music with the world, and I believe people notice that about me. I am 79 years old and still pursuing a dream, which I hope inspires others to do the same.
Q. Any tips or advice for the aspiring artists?
As far as advice for other artists goes: do what makes you feel comfortable and stay committed. Music is not just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle. If you don’t eat, sleep, and breathe it, you might as well forget it.
Q. Any hints for our readers about any upcoming collaboration or new projects that you are working on?
I am constantly working on new projects so stay tuned…
Q. As an artist, do you have any daily rituals or processes that you follow in your creative practice?
The only ritual I practice is walking my dog, Rudy, and waiting for the next day and opportunity to present itself. Once you’re creative, you’re always creative, no matter what you’re doing or where you are.
Q. What role does art play in shaping human experience?
Art is a cultural, social, and independent way to communicate and unite. The power of music can change lives and influence decisions. It can bring societies and communities together. Art is something shared by all, whether consciously or subconsciously. Without art, the world would be a very dull place.
Q. Lastly, as we ask all our guests on our platform, do you have any closing thoughts that you would like to share with the world and our readers?
I hope that geopolitical issues become less fragile and that our country can find a way to unite, rather than remain as fragmented as it has been. My cover of Jackie DeShannon’s hit ‘What the World Needs Now is Love’ expresses it all. As an entertainer, I have no plans of stopping or slowing down. I find joy in the faces and hearts of those who enjoy my music.
